The short answer: yes.
Technology has definitely changed the aspirations of young teens, especially when it comes to their future careers. If the words "Influencer," or "Twitch Streamer," have ever been mentioned by your student in response to questions about the future, this article is for you.
Because, yes, a high school diploma is still important — even if you don't need one to be an "influencer." It certifies that a student has fulfilled basic eligibility requirements for college and career applications. But it's so much more than that. In this article, we'll explore some reasons why a diploma is critical for setting students up for success once they leave the halls of their high school.
A high school diploma isn't just a certificate of completion or a means to an end. It sounds corny, but the time a student spends in high school (or any ongoing education) is an inherently valuable opportunity for self-discovery, mistake-making, and learning how to learn. Here are some other ways a full and complete high school experience can benefit students:
Personal development. High school provides a structured environment where students learn time management, responsibility, social skills, and similar tools for navigating life challenges. These skills are crucial for personal growth and navigating adult life.
Critical thinking. High school education encourages critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Students learn to analyze information, evaluate arguments, and make informed decisions, which are valuable in everyday life and in situations beyond academics.
Civic engagement. Education helps students understand their role in society, fostering civic responsibility and engagement. It promotes awareness of social issues, encourages participation in community activities, and builds a sense of citizenship.
Health literacy. High school often includes course content on health, teaching students about nutrition, fitness, mental health awareness, and the importance of preventive care. This knowledge contributes to lifelong well-being and promotes healthier lifestyles.
Financial literacy. High school education may include practical lessons and training courses in financial literacy, such as budgeting, understanding loans, and managing personal finances. These skills are essential for financial independence and stability.
Cultural awareness. Through education, students are exposed to diverse cultures, histories, and perspectives. This fosters empathy, tolerance, and a broader understanding of the world, preparing them to interact respectfully in a multicultural society.
Personal discovery and fulfillment. Completing high school can be personally fulfilling, instilling a sense of accomplishment and self-confidence. It opens doors to opportunities and allows individuals to pursue their interests and passions.
Family and social relationships. Education can positively impact family relationships by setting a good example for younger siblings or family members. It also enhances social connections by providing common experiences and shared knowledge within communities.
Lifelong learning. High school lays the foundation for lifelong learning by instilling curiosity and a hunger for knowledge. It promotes the habits of staying informed and seeking out information and educational resources.
Resilience and adaptability. The challenges and successes experienced in high school help develop resilience and adaptability. This helps prepare students for navigating future obstacles and changes in their personal and professional lives. Because life can certainly hand you the unexpected.
A high school diploma is one of the basic qualifications for acceptance to most colleges. While some colleges might accept students without one (typically community colleges), your best chance for acceptance and success in higher education is with a high school diploma. It's not just about preparing for college, though.
Some financial aid may not be available if you don’t have a diploma. In order to become eligible for federal student aid, the federal government requires you to show that you’re qualified to obtain a college education. This is possible through earning a high school diploma, or a recognized equivalent such as a GED. Graduates with a diploma and high grades may also qualify for financial aid that GED recipients would not be eligible for.
A high school degree might not be required for certain jobs, particularly in sectors like food and personal services, sales and office support, and blue collar work. However, a high school diploma is one of the (unofficial) prerequisites for securing a higher-paying job in any field.
According to research conducted by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, people without a diploma had the highest unemployment rate (5.6 percent) among those at all education levels. For people who do find work, those without a high school diploma earn, on average, $191 less a week than those who graduate from high school.
Those statistics alone show just how important it is to complete high school, whether you plan to pursue a college degree or immediately enter the workforce.
At New Dawn Charter Schools, we believe every student deserves to graduate with a diploma. NDCS serves over-aged and under-credited students who are 15 to 21 years old.
